So tonight we rented "Definitely, Maybe" and the other movie was "10,000 BC"
I haven't watched either of them y et but they looked like good picks.
I know that 10,000 BC didn't get great reviews but I wanted to create that home theatre feel with the animation and sound effects so hopefully it will be worthwhile!
So far my favorite action flicks for the home theatre experience include (in no particular order)
1) The Day After Tomorrow
2) Terminator 2
3) Twister
4) Star Wars, quite a few of them because their sound effects are excellent
5) Crounching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
6) The Matrix
7) 300
8) Gladiator
hmmm... those are the first few tat come to mind
Another movie that I enjoyed even though it didn't have a great box office draw was:
Next - with Nicholas Cage, and Jessica Biel
... it was about Nicholas Cage who was posing to be a magician in Vegas but his character can actually see 2 minutes into the future... so they try to get him to help the FBI to "see" where this bomb attack will occur... most of the movie was great.. but the end of the movie was a bit surprising... don't want to give it away, but it was still fun to watch.
"Once"
A romantic / drama I watched a while ago that left an impression was a low budget film called "Once". It started slowly, and I found out about it through www.rottentomatoes.com and it had incredible 97% positive reviews. It's about a musician who meets this ogirl, and they end up making music together and the whole thing is like an interwoven story with music.
From Rotten Tomatoes:
Synopsis: The Irish romance ONCE may be a musical, but it is miles away from the traditional Hollywood idea of people bursting into song. Glen Hansard (frontman for indie rock band The Frames) plays the guy, a street musician who is playing for change when he meets the girl (Marketa Irglova), an immigrant... The Irish romance ONCE may be a musical, but it is miles away from the traditional Hollywood idea of people bursting into song. Glen Hansard (frontman for indie rock band The Frames) plays the guy, a street musician who is playing for change when he meets the girl (Marketa Irglova), an immigrant from the Czech Republic. The pair immediately bond over their shared love of music (he is a guitarist, and she plays the piano), and the film chronicles their tentative relationship. Both are weighed down by plenty of baggage: his songs are fueled by a painful breakup, and she is a young mother who left her husband behind in her native country. Like the independent favorite BEFORE SUNRISE, ONCE is a simple, sweet drama that doesn't rely on an elaborate plot. With its use of digital video and handheld cameras, ONCE matches its spare visual style to its intimate mood. Each moment feels stolen from real life, and the story is at once familiar and fresh. Driven more by music than by dialogue, ONCE features a stirring soundtrack of heartfelt indie rock sung by Hansard and Irglova. Before his foray into film, director John Carney (ON THE EDGE) played bass in The Frames, and his passion for music is clear in this modern musical that hits every note perfectly. [Less]
They guy really puts alot of emotion into his songs and I loved the story... it takes a bit to get into but when they do their first piano scene, wow, it's somthing. If you're looking for a romantic story for a Friday evening with alot of reality feel., be sure to check this one out. You can read more details at this link: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/once/
In fact, most of the movies I rent these days, before I do, I check out the reviews at www.rottentomatoes.com because they have a better survey of reviews... including member forums and general reviews across the country.
Sometimes at the video store I'll use my the web browser on my cell phone to check out a movie before I rent it (saves you from using up those 2 hours of time watching a movie that got only 2 or 3% positive reviews)... you know those ones you have never heard about.. and after watching them, you think, "now I know why" hehehehe...
Seen any good movies lately you want to talk about?
Cheers,
Winst
